SAT Math: 5 Strategies to Save Time on Every Question
Master mental math techniques and strategic approaches for the Digital SAT math section. Includes practice problems with AI explanations.
Time is your biggest enemy on SAT Math. These 5 strategies will save you 5-8 minutes per section.
Strategy 1: Use Desmos for Systems of Equations
Instead of substitution or elimination (60-90 seconds), graph both equations and click the intersection point (10 seconds). This alone can save you 3+ minutes across a full test.
Strategy 2: Plug In Numbers
For abstract algebra questions, substitute simple numbers (2, 3, 5) and test each answer choice. This turns complex algebra into simple arithmetic.
Strategy 3: Know Your Special Right Triangles
Memorize 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles. These appear in 3-5 questions per test and knowing the ratios saves 30 seconds each time.
Strategy 4: Backsolve from Answer Choices
When the question asks "what value of x..." start with answer choice C. If it's too big, try A or B. If too small, try D.
Strategy 5: Skip and Return
If a question takes more than 90 seconds, flag it and move on. Answer every easy question first, then return to the hard ones with remaining time.
Raava's tip: Use our Desmos Mastery Course to learn every calculator shortcut. Students who complete it score 30-50 points higher on the math section.
